AVAILABILITY

Q:
How do I know if Granite Broadband is available in my area?
A:  We are expanding fast, but our service is not yet available in all areas.  As we expand our coverage, we will update our coverage area page.

Q: Can I get your service even if I am renting the property in which I live?
A:  Typically, yes.  Granite Broadband will need written authorization from the property owner.

TECHNOLOGY

Q: What kind of technology does Granite Broadband use?
A: Granite Broadband uses WiMAX high-speed Internet.  This technology has many advantages over DSL, cable and satellite.  Essentially, WiMAX uses radio frequencies very similar to the radio you listen to in your car.  For more detailed information, here is a good article explaining WiMax.

Q: What kind of equipment do I need?
A: The outdoor equipment is a radio antenna, but it has a smaller profile than most satellite dishes.  The inside equipment is similar to any other form of high-speed Internet, typically just a small router.  You do not need an active phone line nor cable service to receive Granite Broadband's high-speed Internet.

Q: Do I need a phone line?
A: No.  This form of Internet connectivity operates completely independently of any phones lines, or any wires of any kind (like cable broadband).  You do not need phone, cable, or satellite services to get service from Granite.

Q: Is WiMAX really faster than other high-speed Internet services?
A: WiMAX has greater speed capabilities because the user does not share any bandwith with other customers.  It's like having a ten-lane hi-way all to yourself, while DSL and cable users are stuck in rush hour traffic!  WiMAX is also bi-directional, meaning that upload and download speeds are the same, which also increases speed.

Q: What do all the different "speeds," like 3 MBPS, really mean?
A:   "MBPS" refers to "megabytes per second."  This is how much data can be sent to and from your commputer per second. The upload and download numbers, however, can be misleading.  Several different services offering "3 MBPS" services are not necessarily equal in speed.  Although technically capable of a particular speed, cable and DSL share bandwith among all users.  WiMAX does not share bandwith and therefore will be noticeably faster than other technologies for the reasons mentioned above.

Q:  Does the weather affect the quality of the service?
A: No.  WiMAX uses a technology that is much less affected by the weather than other technologies.
